Emancipation from Marriage: Just for Women?
11. August 2010
admin
Reading this article in Slate today, we are starting to wonder about this: we always hear about women going through their reality when entering divorce. Eat Pray Love, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, etc. seem to be in our faces, but what about men? What happens to them when they divorce? I’ve yet to see “How Harry Got His Groove Back”, or alternatives about men divorcing…

9. August 2010
admin
This article left us a little…perplexed. On one hand, we appreciate her tenacity and persistence on beginning with the end in mind….but on the other hand, really?
The best thing we can think of to say here is the old adage: may you get what you want, and want what you get.

5 Cable Channels…Coming Soon?
8. August 2010
admin
Studying cable television of late, we think it might be time to add the following channels:
1. Reality Bites Channel - all the reality shows for angry housewives in one spot (so we can skip over it).
2. Cake & Cupcake Channel - for all the shows that bake, or talk about baking, or reality shows of people who started a cake or cupcake business.
3. Pitch Channel - instead of studios hemmoraging money on films and taking way too much risk, rank out film ideas on this channel and actually ptich and vote on which the studios should actually MAKE on this channel.
4. Grad School Channel - show what it is REALLY like to go and get a MBA, PhD, MD, DO, DVM, JD, etc. on this channel. Then people could watch and determine, in a more educated fashion, whether or not they really want to invest their time and a couple hundred grand in furthering their education.
5. The Nature Channel - like Nature, the journal. Have shows on really new cutting edge technical science going on in the world. We can handle it, really. Besides, you’ll be light years ahead of the other channels, which assume that the average adult in the US has an IQ of a dead squid.

The Life Aggregator
8. August 2010
admin
Reading this article, we must agree with the students interviewed. There are just now too many sites to watch and sign into these days. In fact, if we had a nickel for every sign in to check every email, facebook, and other social media platform multiple times a day, we’d be in the money by now.
Other than my smartphone, no one has managed to put a platform together whereby we can connect our different email accounts, social media accounts and anywhere else we are online on ONE screen, real time, and secure. This would be most helpful.
Life aggregator to the rescue!

We have ONE rare, one-of-a-kind autographed copy of Indianapolis: A Young Professional’s Guide, Second Edition that we’ll be donating to a not for profit charitable cause. Who should that be? Do you have a cause that needs book donations for a silent auction, etc.? If so, contact us and let us know and your organization might just be the lucky winner!

That Place…in the Middle
4. August 2010
admin
Chatting with a girlfriend of mine tonight in Chicago (yes, being a friend of mine also carries with it the warning of possibly being on my blog), we conversed about being in that place…in the middle.
You might know what I’m talking about–that place somewhere between the age of 34 and 55, where it appears at first glance that the rest of the world is completely content being happily paired up, yet, if you’re in this middle space and are not, you’re a little perplexed on where to find other people stuck in the middle.
You might go to the bars, where everyone is mid-twenties (and challenged with their own quarter life shock-and-awe-crises), and if you’re a woman, talking to the younger lads just might mistakingly brand you a “cougar” (another wretched label society has put on older women who seemingly prey on younger men. But, I have yet to meet a man who didn’t like being paid attention to by a woman.) I digress.
I’m here to talk about the middle place. If you feel like you’re stuck there, that place between young professional and “mature”, fear not. There are others out there just like you. People holding out for the very best fit, and fierce enough to boldly go out on their own, into the wide world, while waiting for him or her to arrive. And, if he or she never arrives, so what?
The key just might be, instead on focusing on someone else and making them what you’d like them to be, or jamming them in some kind of mold best fit for your idea of “ideal”, we should each instead think about making us our own best selves. How will I be my best me? is another way to put it. That way, we can be ready to be our best version of ourselves when Mr. Right or Ms. Right does come along. And, if she or he never arrives, we’re still rad anyway!
Ok, that, and seriously - we need to have some places in town where a girl or guy can get a drink without fear of beer being spilled over them, or possibly losing their hearing from screaming over the cheesy dance music. There should be bars for those of us in the middle. It would be lovely.
In conclusion, if you’re in the middle, it’s OK! Besides, the grass always appears greener on the other side, until you get there.

Monument Circle Hawtness - Duh!
1. August 2010
admin
This article in The Star this weekend brings one word to mind - DUH!
Of course the circle is hot - it has always been hot. However, it just hasn’t really been perceived as even accessible in the past, other than to perhaps those who work around the circle. Even though in our opinion the city had a fantastic experimental idea in shutting down Monument Circle in August (but never seized it), it has now made the perception that the circle might actually be obtainable for live events.
This is good fallout. While it would have been even better to shut it down in August to try the concept of a more walkable city, we’re glad to see the positive fallout in other organizations making the circle actually a more creative venue for other stuff in the city.
Now, dear city, please consider actually shutting the monument circle down next summer - even only for a month. Just do it. You never know how many other cool ideas other citizens can drum up - only if they can see that it is possible.

Kindergarten
31. July 2010
admin
This story in the NY Times had me recall back to my days of kindergarten, oh-so-many decades ago. My teacher was Mrs. Stoneburner. I’m not going to lie, she was tough. Really tough. But the more I think about it, the more she probably had to do with my success than a lot of other teachers in my life.
This then begs the question: is kindergarten one of, if not the, most important grade in life? It in a way sets the tone for your entire academic career, in many ways. So…should kindergarten teachers get more pay?
Flipping it - if you have a child that is younger and you’re contemplating where to put them in kindergarten, do yourselves a favor. Do your diligence to find the absolute best teacher you can, in a smaller classroom, and make sure the child learns from the best. It could lead to bigger and better things much later in life. At least according to the NY Times article, at least $320K earned more over a career….!

More Gain, Less Drain
28. July 2010
admin
Overall, in my posse of people, I’m seeing more drain these days on Indianapolis for young professionals. I’m continuing to ask why.
One mutual young Indy professional had a bunch of friends move to San Francisco. So, I asked why. His response? ”There’s more opportunity out there.” Is there? Really? And what does that “opportunity” look like? Is it more funding for startups, more basic entry level jobs, more fun, more culture, or a combination thereof that is making young professionals wave goodbye to Indy?
